Reflecting on African History
Imagine the state of people when they are under the rule of a dictator: People do not have freedom and are forced to do only what is beneficial to the dictator. We clearly understand that such dictatorial structure is the cause of a delay of development, violation of human rights and poverty of people in a country. Similar patterns are observed in colonized countires33.
Africa is not only under the rule of dictators but has also experienced colonization. According to the group of authors of the study “The Impact of Colonization on the Economic Development of Africa” from the University of Tennessee34. The goal of colonization was the exploitation of physical, human and economic resources in favor of the colonizing country. The expansion of colonization and the division of Africa by European states stopped the natural development of the African economic system. The Atlantic slave trade existed in Africa for more than 300 years! The demand for African slaves stimulated its development.
One of the consequences of colonization, according to the scientists at the University of Tennessee, was the subordination of the African economy to the interests of Europe. In particular, the colonialist turned Africa into a source of raw materials, they used these raw materials to produce goods for consumption in Europe.
